Frequently asked questions

Using Carn

What does Carn do?

While you read a lesson on Microsoft Learn, Carn adds short multiple-choice questions to the page, written from what you have just read. You answer, see straight away whether you were right, and read on.

Is it free?

Yes. There is no account, subscription or trial. You supply a Google Gemini API key, and Google offers a free tier for those keys. Limits depend on the model.

Which pages does it work on?

Carn adds questions on lesson pages under learn.microsoft.com/training/modules/ and leaves every other page alone. You can open the side panel from any page, but it only does something on a module. Introductions are saved to your notes but not quizzed, and knowledge checks and summaries are skipped.

Which browsers does it support?

Chrome and Edge on desktop.

Can I take my notes elsewhere?

Yes. In the Library you can export the notes for any module as a Markdown file, or export everything at once.

The Gemini key

Why do I need a key?

Carn has no server of its own. To write questions it asks Google Gemini directly from your browser, using a key that belongs to you. That is also why Carn itself can be free.

How do I get one?

Sign in to Google AI Studio, create an API key, then paste it into Carn’s settings and choose a model.

Where is my key kept?

In your browser’s extension storage, on this device. It is never synced to a browser account or sent to us, and it goes to Google only when a question is written. Browser storage is not a vault, so treat the key like any other.

It says I have hit a limit.

Google limits how many requests a key can make each minute and each day, and the limits differ by model. Wait the time shown, or choose another model in settings. Carn counts its own requests, but Google does not tell apps what is left of a limit, so check AI Studio for the full picture.

Which model should I choose?

Any model that supports text generation works. Newer Gemini models tend to write better questions. Gemma models are available too, and their limits can differ from those of Gemini models, so compare them in AI Studio.

Questions and accuracy

Are the questions always right?

No. An AI model writes them and models make mistakes. Treat Microsoft Learn as the source of truth, and check the lesson if a question looks wrong.

Will it help me pass an exam?

It can help you remember what you read. It is a study aid, not exam preparation on its own, and it does not use real exam questions.

Why are some pages not quizzed?

Introductions, knowledge checks and summaries have nothing worth quizzing, so Carn leaves them alone. If a lesson fails because of a limit or an error, Carn waits a short while before trying again so it does not waste your quota.

Privacy

What does Carn collect?

Nothing is sent to us. There is no Carn server, account or analytics. The lessons you read, the questions and your answers are stored in your browser, on your device.

What does Google see?

The text of the lesson you are on, together with your key, when Carn asks Gemini to write questions. Google handles that under its own terms, and free and paid keys are treated differently, so check them for your key.

How do I delete everything?

Use Delete everything in the Library, or remove a single lesson there. That clears lessons, questions and answers but leaves your key, which you can clear in settings. Uninstalling the extension removes all of it. The full details are in the privacy policy.
