Privacy policy
Last updated 10 October 2026.
Carn is a browser extension that writes short quiz questions while you read Microsoft Learn lessons. The short version: Carn has no account, no server and no analytics. Everything it keeps stays in your browser, and the only place it sends anything is Google's Gemini API, using your own key.
Who is responsible
Carn is made by an independent developer. Because Carn has no server and no accounts, the developer holds no personal data about you, and there is nothing on a Carn server to access, correct or delete. Your data is in your own browser, and you control it there.

What Carn reads
When you open a lesson under learn.microsoft.com/training/modules/, Carn reads the text and headings of that page so it can write questions about it. It does not read other sites, or pages you have not opened.
What Carn stores, and where
Carn stores the following in your browser's extension storage, on your device only:
- Your Gemini API key, your chosen model, and the on/off switch.
- A copy of each lesson you have read: its title, headings and text.
- The questions written for each lesson, and your answers.
- A count of the requests Carn has made to Google, with token counts, so you can see your own usage.
None of this is synced to a browser account or another device. Removing a lesson in the Library deletes its text, questions and answers. Delete everything clears all saved lessons, questions and answers, and uninstalling Carn removes everything, key included. Your API key is kept until you clear it in Settings or uninstall. Browser extension storage is convenient, not a vault, so treat your key as you would any other credential.
What Carn sends, and to whom
- Google (Gemini API). To write questions, Carn sends the lesson text to Google's Gemini API, together with your API key. Google handles it under your own agreement with them and the terms for the key you created. Free-tier and paid keys can be treated differently, so check Google's terms for yours. Carn does not control what Google does with it.
- Microsoft Learn. Carn may fetch Microsoft's public Learn catalogue to work out which learning path a lesson belongs to. That request carries no personal data.
Carn sends nothing else anywhere. There is no advertising, no crash reporting and no server of its own.
Exports
Export notes saves a file to your device. What you do with that file is up to you.
